Lauderdale's missing-child policy and Amber Alert procedures
Child age 11 and younger:
Patrol supervisor and detective will respond to the scene.
The child's home will be searched.
A "be on the lookout" alert will be broadcast to police.
Special Victims Unit must be notified.
Efforts will be made to notify the public.
Child age 12 through 17:
Supervisor will determine whether an immediate search is warranted, based on factors such as age, health and history of running away.
If harm or foul play is suspected, the case may be handled like a missing child 11 or younger.
AMBER ALERTS POLICY
Florida's Amber Alert is a notification system for kidnapped children, not runaways. For an alert to be issued:
The child must be under 18.
There must be clear proof of an abduction.
Police must believe the child's life is in danger.
There must be a detailed description of the child and/or the abductor's vehicle.
The activation must be supported by local law enforcement.
