2009 Editorial Division Internships
WelcomeThis is the South Florida Sun-Sentinel web site for college internships and Metpro training program. We try to answer all of your questions here about our paid and academic credit internships, Metpro, our news operation and our community. Thanks for your interest.
Internships
The Sun-Sentinel offers internships year-round for college students. Both paid and for academic credit. We have a strong program that includes mentors and training. We also have a strong record for hiring interns, with many former interns on the staff. Click here to see a copy of our intern brochure.
Paid intern positions are primarily in the summer and for 10 weeks, usually beginning the first week in June. Interns are paid $530 per week. Reporters and photographers must have cars and are reimbursed for mileage, parking and tolls while on assignment. Internships are open to college students, preferably juniors, seniors, recent graduates and graduate students.
The ideal candidate will have experience on a college publication and a previous internship. Ability to speak a second language and knowledge of South Florida also are valuable. We do expect interns from their first day to have the skills to perform their assigned job at the level of an entry-level staff member.
Paid Internships
Applications will be accepted through November 15, 2008 for Summer 2009. These 10-week paid internships will begin in early June 2008 for the following positions:
- News Reporters
- Business Reporter
- Medical/Health Reporter (Kaiser Family Foundation sponsored)
- Copy Editor
- Page Designer
- Graphics Artist
- Photographer
- Online Producer
Applications will be accepted through March 1, 2009 for a 10-week paid internship that will begin in September 2009 for the following position:
Sports Reporter
Academic Credit Internships
Internships for academic credit are available. While a salary is not offered, the Sun-Sentinel will complete necessary paper work for school credit. Reporters and photographers who use personal vehicles for assignments will be reimbursed for mileage and parking. Academic credit internships are available year-round and are offered in most departments of the newsroom, including broadcast and online.
Metpro
Metpro is a two-year training program designed to encourage journalists from underrepresented communities and backgrounds to consider careers in the newsroom of the Sun-Sentinel and other news organizations that are part of Tribune Company. Six months of training will take place at the Sun-Sentinel starting in Fall 2009. The trainee will learn from experienced journalists about writing, interviewing, researching and covering beats while writing articles for the Sun-Sentinel. After successfully completing the first six months of training, the Metpro reporter would begin 18 months in an entry-level reporting position.
Mentoring and periodic evaluations will continue through the program. It is expected that this reporter's performance will result in a staff position being offered. Applicants should be beginning journalists who are capable of conducting interviews in Spanish or Creole. The successful candidate will receive a salary and benefits. Applications are not yet available for the program that begins in 2009. To request an application, please send an email to Recruitment Editor Kathy Pellegrino at kpellegrino@sun-sentinel.com and you will be advised when applications are available.
To Apply
To apply for a paid or academic credit internship, send a letter indicating your area of journalism interest, a resume and 7-10 work samples. If you have a permanent as well as a college address, please provide both. Reporting clips, photographs, graphics and illustrations should be mounted or photocopied on 8 1/2 by 11-inch paper. Photos and artwork may be submitted on slides, CDs or DVDs. We discourage candidates from sending any material that must be returned, as this is not always possible. In the selection process, preference is given to those who have experience in journalism. Applicants should have worked for their college publication or have had a previous internship.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel
We're a major force in South Florida's news industry. Our print and online editions cover a dynamic and growing area -- the nation's sixth-largest metropolitan area -- with 5.2 million people in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties. Our journalists work from newsrooms in Fort Lauderdale, Weston, Delray Beach, West Palm Beach and Miami and from bureaus in Havana, Washington, D.C., and Tallahassee. We successfully maintain strong local coverage with an eye on our diverse market. Immigration from the Caribbean and Latin American has dramatically changed the demographics of the region and is reflected in our coverage.
We're in a competitive market, going head-to-head with two other daily papers, their web editions and their Spanish-language publications.
The Sun-Sentinel is a leader in new media. The Internet edition, www.sun-sentinel.com, provides breaking news along with in-depth coverage, features and entertainment. Other publications include El Sentinel, a weekly Spanish-language paper; City Link, a weekly alternative newspaper, and Teen Link, a weekly for young readers. A television and radio broadcast staff produces news for the Tribune-owned Miami station, WSFL-TV (South Florida), as well as for a television partner and several radio partners. We're part of Tribune Co., which publishes 8 newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times. Tribune owns a variety of media businesses, including television and radio stations nationwide.
About South Florida
The Sun-Sentinel's market stretches from West Palm Beach to Miami. In the center is Fort Lauderdale. It's an exciting place to live and work as a journalist. The proximity to Cuba, the Caribbean and South and Central America brings an international flavor to the community and the headlines. You're never at a loss for things to do. Clubs, restaurants and street-side cafes provide after-work entertainment. Miami's South Beach is a short drive down Interstate 95. Orlando, Key West and the Bahamas can make for a nice weekend trip. The region is home to teams in four major professional sports. And you'll never be far from great shopping, like the two-mile-long outlet mall, Sawgrass Mills.
