John Beck, born Aug. 21, 1981 in Hayward, Calif., is a quarterback for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League. The 6-foot-2, 216-pound Beck became the 12th starting quarterback for the Dolphins since Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino retired after the 1999 season when he made his debut against the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 18. Beck is the first Dolphins rookie quarterback to start since Marino in 1983. Beck, 26, was drafted by the Dolphins in the second round (40th overall pick) of the 2007 NFL Draft. The decision was met with jeers by Dolphins fans who were present at the team's draft party. They expected the Dolphins to select former Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn with their ninth selection of the first round. Instead, the Dolphins chose Ohio State receiver/returner Ted Ginn Jr., because they felt that Beck would still be there in the second round. Beck showed promise in preseason, displaying a strong arm and poise under pressure in leading the Dolphins to consecutive fourth-quarter comeback victories over the Jaguars and Bucs. He was 27 of 48 for 300 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for a passer rating of 71.5 in the preseason. As a 22-year-old freshman at in 2003, Beck earned Academic All-Mountain West honors and competed in eight games, including four starts, becoming only the second true freshman to start in Brigham Young history. While a sophomore, Beck earned second-team All-Mountain West honors and started at quarterback in 10 of the Cougars' 11 games. He threw for 2,563 yards with 15 touchdowns and eight interceptions to earn second-team honors. As a junior, Beck was an All-Mountain West first-team selection, named Academic All-MWC and named team offensive MVP. He threw for a league-best 3,709 yards with 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Beck was ranked fifth nationally with a league-best 309.1 yards-per-game average. As a senior, Beck was ranked second in the nation with an efficiency rating of 169.05, as he completed 289 of 417 for 3,885 yards with 32 touchdowns and just eight interceptions. He led BYU to a 10-2 record, including 8-0 in the conference. He was a finalist for the Davey O'Brien and Unitas Golden Arm Awards, and created buzz on the Heisman watch lists. Beck led the Cougars to their first bowl win since 1996, a 38-8 rout of the Oregon Ducks in the Las Vegas Bowl. He totaled 375 yards and two scores and also had 26 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Beck's main target, Jonny Harline, was named the MVP after a 181 yard and 1 touchdown performance. Overall, he started 38 of 41 games played, and completed 885 of 1,418 (62.4 percent) for 11,021 yards with 79 touchdowns and 34 interceptions. He finished his career second in school history in completions, attempts and yards, trailing only Ty Detmer in all three categories. He's third in touchdown passes, trailing Detmer (121) and Jim McMahon (84). Beck is married to Barbara Burke, and they have a son, Ty, who was named after Ty Detmer and Ty Murray the rodeo star. An avid fisherman and hunter, Beck was an Eagle Scout. As part of his BYU studies, Beck, a devout Mormon, served a two-year mission in Lisbon, Portugal, where he learned to speak Portuguese. Beck was a three-letter winner at Mountain View High in Mesa, Arizona, and was a star pitcher and infielder. He posted a 25-2 record over his junior and senior seasons. Beck holds the state record with 42 touchdown passes his senior season while leading his team to a state title to earn Arizona High School Player of the Year. Beck credits his father, Wendell, for nurturing his love of football as they watched college and NFL games together all weekend long.
