The stadium was home to two defunct professional soccer teams, with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers playing there from 1977 to 1983, and the Miami Fusion from 1998 to 2001. The stadium, which included a track, was renovated and the track covered when it became the home of the Fusion. The stadium has also hosted the state high school soccer tournaments and several international soccer matches, and it was the site of the 1973 state championship football game won by Hollywood Hills, the first time a Broward County school won the state title. The stadium is owned by the City of Fort Lauderdale and operated by the Broward County School District. It still serves as the home stadium for several high schools as well as the Florida Atlantic University football team. Lockhart could be torn down soon, as the Fort Lauderdale is negotiating selling the site to the Baltimore Orioles, who have plans to raze the stadium to expand their spring training facilities.
