The world of sugar cane, citrus farms and Lake Okeechobee are a world -- and only two hours -- away from urban South Florida.
Those who drive 70 mph across the state on US 27 will see vast fields of sugar, but few get the opportunity to get up-close to the big Clewiston Sugar Mill. That's why the Clewiston Chamber of Commerce created a bus tour that takes visitors behind the scenes to experience the region. The tour includes a visit to a sugar refinery and a citrus juice plant.
Sugarland Tours are offered during the harvest season, mid-October through March. Tours begin at 10 a.m. weekdays and the cost is $32 per person, which includes lunch at the historic Clewiston Inn.
Note: Group rates are available for parties of 15 or more and for groups providing their own bus transportation. Reservations are required. Children under 12 years of age are not permitted on the tours.
